Egypt: Desert Safari

Desert Safaris

More than 90% of Egypt is desert, so why not incorporate a safari through the country’s more rugged terrain?

The majority of Backpacker Concierge’s excursions are based out of the Bahariya Oasis, just 350km west of Cairo. From here, you can visit all of the oases using a variety of transport – 4×4 jeeps, camels, or your own two feet.

Alternatively, we offer trips from Cairo to the remote Siwa Oasis, next to the Libyan border, for those interested in experiencing ancient tribal tradition and customs.

Our most popular excursions are the 1-night White Desert safari and the 3-night Siwa excursion. Both are perfect for the adventurer working on a tight budget, in terms of time and cash.

Follow the links above for a closer look at the magnificent desert landscapes awaiting you.

White Desert

Travel across the wind-eroded sandstone plains to the Bahariya Oasis, where lies the Valley of the Golden Mummies, one of the most important finds in Egypt since the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Your time in Bahariya can be spent at one of the thoughtful ecolodges or you may choose to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime, rugged, full-day jeep safari to the Black Desert, the Alabaster Mountain, and the Agabat area for flower stones.

Of course, our safaris incorporate the breathtaking White Desert. Here you will marvel at the windswept landscapes and enjoy a delicious dinner while camping beneath the stars.

For adventurers interested in a longer desert experience, you may continue on the Western Desert Loop to Luxor (via the Farafra, Dakhla, and Kharga Oases) or head north to the Great Sand Sea and Siwa Oasis.

Siwa Oasis

Siwa is a unique oasis, in that its Berber and Siwi roots are still intact after countless years of foreign influence, allowing it to maintain an air of secrecy and tradition that few outsiders can begin to understand.

Many clients venture out to Siwa simply to relax and escape from modernity. But for those looking to explore new terrain, you will be pleasantly surprised by the antiquity programs and desert safaris available.

The oasis can be reached by road from Cairo or Alexandria, alternatively private jets are available for those desiring a more luxurious getaway.

Marsa Alam

Our Marsa Alam Desert Safaris are for the true desert enthusiast. This harsh terrain is rarely traversed by tourists, yet offers insight on today’s nomadic existence and touches upon the historical relevance of the region.

After breakfast at your secluded dive camp along the Red Sea, you will proceed southwest to Wadi el Gamal National Park. The Wadi (or valley, or dry river bed) was well-known throughout history as an important trading route and we see evidence of this along the way with remnants of Roman caravan stations and tombs of the Blemmey tribe.

After feasting on a lunch prepared right before your eyes (imagine ginger coffee and fresh bread baked beneath the sand!), you will reach an area where emeralds were mined in Pharaonic times and come face to face with nomads.

This safari can be combined with an excursion to the Shelatin Market, where the real Africa starts. Known for its camel market, you will also bare witness to various tribes, like the Rashaid, Bishari, and Ababda. A day you will not soon forget!

The newest additions to the Backpacker Concierge family are two out-of-this-world
opportunities:

Adventure: 12 passenger boat with shared sleeping quarters
Boutique: 8 passenger boat with 4 private bedrooms

Please note that a minimum number of passengers are required for the boat to sail. We may be able to pair you with other interested parties. Journeys can start from Aswan or Abu Simbel, as these boats do not require wind to sail.
